Support for Wellbeing
In our schools, we want all to flourish spiritually, morally, socially, emotionally and culturally, and good mental health and wellbeing is needed to help this flourishing of staff, pupils and their families alike. The C of E’s mental health and wellbeing guidance puts it like this:
‘Nurturing the health and wellbeing of pupils is a key facet of holistic education for human flourishing as exemplified in the Church of England Vision for Education: Deeply Christian, Serving the Common Good. It should not be seen as a stand-alone item but as part of an embedded approach across the school’s ethos, linking with other aspects of health education, spiritual development, the wider school curriculum and the ethos and policies that underpin the school. Any whole-school approach needs to ensure good partnership working with other agencies and health services.’
The SIAMS schedule, places great emphasis on the flourishing of the whole school community. Within the 2023 schedule, this question is asked: How does the school’s theologically rooted Christian vision create a culture in which pupils and adults are treated well?
The Ofsted framework recognises that it is important to support individual students with specific behavioural and mental health needs but there is also a need to create a culture that fosters emotional wellbeing and resiliency within the school.
The Diocese is able to offer wellbeing support to school headteachers, heads of school and trust CEOs, through supervision, coaching, and access to wellbeing support as outlined in the pastoral care letter below.
